Topsail Island & Coast

Where to Find Seafood

Shrimp, oysters, flounder and crab — the freshest catch on the Carolina coast. Here's what's in season, plus the restaurants and dockside markets serving it up.

What's in Season

Shrimp

Late spring–fall

Local white and brown shrimp are the backbone of Carolina seafood — peel-and-eat boils and fried shrimp baskets are everywhere in summer.

Oysters

Sept–April (R-months)

Farm-raised and wild clusters are best in cool months. Look for raw bars and BYO-oyster roasts once the water drops.

Flounder & Fluke

Spring–fall

Summer flounder haunt the sound and nearshore reefs — a staple on local menus, often stuffed or pan-fried.

Blue Crab

Summer

Pulled from the marsh creeks behind the island. Soft-shell is a spring delicacy; hardbacks star in crab cakes all summer.

Tuna & Mahi

Warm months offshore

Yellowfin tuna and mahi-mahi come back on the docks from Gulf Stream charters — call ahead for fresh-off-the-boat specials.

Grouper & Snapper

Year-round reef fish

Reef-trip landings keep grouper and snapper on menus; Calabash-style breading is the local trademark.

Want it straight off the boat? Watch for charter docks in Sneads Ferry late afternoon — mates often sell the day's catch when boats unload. Always buy from licensed markets or restaurants, and respect size & catch limits if you're hauling your own.
