Tips for Biking the Island

  • Ride the strand at low tide — soft sand any other time will stop you cold. Check tide times first.
  • Lower your tire pressure on the beach (around 30 PSI) for better grip on wet sand.
  • Helmets are required under 16 in NC and strongly recommended for everyone; lights at night.
  • Summer traffic on NC 50 is heavy — stick to side streets and beach accesses.
  • Yield to pedestrians and nesting-turtle zones; never ride over marked nests.
  • Bring a lock for beach-access posts, and rinse salt off your chain after a strand ride.
